US Tennis Open
The US Open is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, running from 1881, and that’s why it has been named as one of the Grand Slams. The surface is now ‘DecoTurf’ and has been since 1978, but the US Open has changed its surface twice since 1881, more than any other Grand Slam. First it was Grass, then it changed to Clay in 1975 and changed to DecoTurf in 1978, although it is most commonly called hard court.
The total prize money for the US Open is $21,600,000 with the men and women’s singles winners getting $1,600,000 each with the runners up getting half this with $600,000.
The US Open is unique in the fact that if the match goes to a 5th set for men, 3rd for women and doubles, then it is decided in a tiebreak at 6-6. This is different to the other three Grand Slams as they say you must win by two clear games. This means more people bet on the US Open and during live matches as the matches are quicker and more exciting.
In 2006 the US Open show courts were changed so that they could implement the hawk eye challenge system. 30.5% of men’s challenges and 35.85% of women’s challenges were correct and so the result was over turned.
Betting on the US Tennis Open
Betting on the US Open is both tricky and fun, purely because of how players with an outside chance often cause an upset. Roger Federer won the title 5 years in a row, and so for those 5 years, as you can imagine, people were betting on Roger Federer at the US Open and winning.
But in 2009, Juan Martin Del Potro caused an upset and beat Roger Federer in the final, despite most bets being on Roger Federer to win. 2010 offers the best chances for any player to win the whole tournament. Although Rafael Nadal is playing some amazing tennis, and betting on Rafael Nadal in the US Open is a good bet, all the other top ten players have a chance. Juan Martin Del Potro is unlikely to repeat due to a wrist injury which he will try and play through. This tells me that betting on Juan Martin Del Potro in the 2010 US Open is a bad idea.
The womens singles tournament is just as open, nobody knows who is going to win. In the past 4 years, there has been a different champion each time. You could bet on a lower ranked player, and still do well from betting on the US Open. As it’s her home country, betting on Serena Williams at the US Open is a great idea as she is ranked highly in the world, and being on home turf always helps. Caroline Wozniacki will be looking to repeat her 2009 US Open, and to go one better and win. If you were to bet on Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open, you could end up making a lot of money.
The 2010 US Open could have any winner, so make sure you place your bet on the US Open.
